Spray Bottle Tie Dye by Katie Hacker

 

When you see the “helping hand” symbol on a project, it means you may need adult supervision to do the project.

Always cover your work surface with a mat or some type of protective covering like wax paper or plastic.

Time needed for project:
2 hours

Main Materials:
Elmer’s® Mini Foam Star (or other) shape
Elmer’s® Masking Tape
2 colors of Rit® fabric dye
White t-shirt (washed and dried)

Basic Materials:
Hot water
2 small spray bottles
Plastic gloves
Newspapers or plastic to cover your work surface
Storage bin lid or cardboard to put inside shirt

Instructions:

  1. Cover your workspace with newspapers.
  2. Place a lid or piece of cardboard inside the shirt.
  3. Tape the back of the star to the t-shirt.
  4. Use masking tape to make a box around the star.
  5. Put on the plastic gloves.
  6. Place 3-4 drops of dye into each bottle.
  7. Fill the bottles with hot water.
  8. Spray one color of dye in several spots on the front of the t-shirt.
  9. Use the other color of dye to spray more spots, covering the shirt with dye.
  10. Once the dye is dry, remove the tape.
  11. Don't forget to dye the back of your shirt, too!
  12. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for washing and drying your customized t-shirt.

Variations: You can make all kinds of patterns using shapes and masking tape with spray bottle tie dye! Spell your name with tape or spray the outline of different size lids for a polka dot look.
