Painting Basics - Shading & Highlighting - Creating Depth and Form
By Prudy Vannier

Shading and highlighting – what is that?

Shading is a dark color added to an object to make shadow.

Highlighting is a lighter color added to an object to show which side the light source is shining on it. It is opposite the shadow side.

For an example, I can put a dark green on the base of the leaf that I am painting and light green on the tip. Dark green can create a flip in the leaf, and a very light green can add even more detail on the tip with a jagged edge.

Remember to add detail and interest, volume and depth with shading and highlighting.
