  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Book
  • Ruler
Patterns:

Pop Up Pattern (PDF)
Wave Patterns (PDF)
Whale Patterns (PDF)

Instructions:

  1. Use glue stick to glue front page of book to inside cover.
  2. Use scissors to carefully cut out a few pages then glue next page to front cover.
  3. Cut out patterns from pattern sheets.  Use pencil to trace patterns onto colored paper tracing number indicated on pattern.  Cut out.
  4. Fold sheet of light turquoise cardstock in half.  Use ruler and pencil to mark a line ½” from fold, then add two more lines ½” from each.
  5. Use ruler to mark off following marks along fold line: ½”, 1 ½”, 2”, 3”, 31/2”, 5, 51/2”, 61/2”, 7”, 8”.
  6. Use a ruler to draw a line from marker along fold to long lines: first two – first line, second two – third line, next two – second line, next two – third line, last two – first line.  Use scissors to carefully snip each short line.
  7. Fold sections formed by snips.  Carefully open paper.  Push snipped areas toward center creating “steps” along folded edge. Pieces will be glued to these sections creating depth of pop-up book.
  8. Use colored pencils to color in different paper sections for whale, waves and sand referring to photo for color and designs.
  9. Cut a strip of blue paper 6” x 1 ½”.  Fold in half then apply glue stick to inside and press together, forming an extension for whale then use Tacky glue to adhere to center step.
  10. To assemble pop-up, start by gluing large folded section in place.  Apply Glue Stick to back then press folded edge into crease of book having curved edge toward front.
  11. Position the two side wave sections onto first and last step, then add Tacky Glue to front of step and in place adjusting as needed to fit.
  12. Glue front wave section onto steps two and four.  Glue whale in place on extension, making sure fin is positioned in slit of front wave.  Glue long wave in place along top edge at back of design then glue on two sand pieces to front section.  Let dry.  Close book making sure it will fold when closed and adjust fin slit if needed.
