Peacock Feather Batik T-Shirt

The peacock is the national bird of India symbolizing grace, pride and beauty.

When you see the “helping hand” symbol on a project, it means you may need adult supervision to do the project. Always cover your work surface with a mat or some type of protective covering like wax paper or plastic. Always use care when using tools or a heat source. Be careful and safe!

Main supplies:

  • Elmer’s® Washable School Glue
  • Tulip® One-Step Tie Dye™ - Turquoise,Green, and Blue
  • White t-shirt – all cotton
  • Plastic wrap
  • Tape
  • Plastic trash bag
  • Spray bottle of water
  • Plastic gloves


Patterns:

Instructions:

  1. Wash shirt to remove sizing then dry in dryer.  Iron smooth.
  2. Cover pattern with plastic wrap, taping wrap to back of pattern to secure.
  3. Insert pattern into shirt where desired.
  4. Squeeze a thick bead of School Glue along pattern lines touching tip of bottle to fabric leaving a bead of glue.  Let dry – this may take overnight depending on humidity.
  5. Cover work surface with trash bag.  Spritz front and black of shirt with water to dampen.  Slightly crumple undecorated part of shirt following instructions. 
  6. Wearing plastic gloves from dye box, fill each dye bottle with water to indicated line.  Replace cap and tighten.  Shake over sink to thoroughly mix.
  7. Squeeze Green dye into center of feather, and then blue around center and down stem.  Squeeze Turquoise on remainder of shirt squeezing and turning fabric.
  8. Let set 4 – 6 hours then wash in washer with hot water and a small amount of laundry soap – the hot water will dissolve glue creating batik look.  Dry in dryer.
